Signing in with a school account

School g.risd.org accounts are blocked by the district. Here is why, how to add a personal sign-in to your team account, and who can help.

Why school accounts don’t work

The school district runs its own Google accounts (g.risd.org) and decides which outside apps they may sign in to. The team app is not on the district’s list, and may never be. Some school sign-ins get through and some are blocked by Google before they reach us, and that can change at any time.

So every team account needs a personal sign-in as well: a personal Google account or a personal email. Your school address can stay on your profile as your student email.

Make or use a personal Google account

  1. 1. Already have a Gmail or other personal Google account? Use that one. Any personal email works too.
  2. 2. No personal account? Make one free at accounts.google.com (Create account, For my personal use). It takes two minutes. Ask a parent if you need help.
  3. 3. When Google asks which account to use, pick the personal one, not the school one.

Add it with the team bot’s link

In Slack, send the team bot signin help. It replies with a link that adds a personal sign-in to your team account. The link works once, for 15 minutes, and only for you.

  1. 1. Open the link on your phone or a computer.
  2. 2. Sign in there with your personal Google account or personal email.
  3. 3. From then on, sign in with that personal account. Your team account, hours and to-dos are all there.

Never forward the link. Whoever opens it can add their own sign-in to your account. The bot tells you when a sign-in is added; if it was not you, tell a mentor straight away.

Already signed in with your school account? Use Add a personal sign-in instead; no link needed.

Ask a mentor

Not in Slack yet, or the link does not work? Tell a mentor. A Tier 1 admin can add your personal address to your team account from your person page. If you already made a second account with your personal address, they will merge the two so nothing is lost.
